Via the T (also walking from Davis or Porter Squares):
Get on the Red line towards Alewife. We're closest to Davis, but not much farther away from Porter, so directions from both are provided below.
Use the exit marked "College Avenue". At the top of the escalators, head out the doors to your left, to the bus stop (this lane is closed to regular traffic). Turn left and walk straight down the street. You'll cross through a parking lot, and onto a bike path. Stay on the bike path until you come to the next street intersection; this is Willow Avenue. Turn left on Willow, walk up one block to #161; we're in apartment #2.
(Alternately, you can take Highland Avenue, which parallels the bikeway, down to Willow instead, and take a left from there; it's not as pleasant, but there are more stores and landmarks.)
At the top of the long long escalators, you'll come out onto Mass Ave. Orient yourself by locating and heading to the Star Market strip mall across the street. Head through the shopping plaza parking lot, passing in front of the Star Market, to the opposite exit, and take a left onto Elm Street. Walk down around three blocks and cross over at Willow Avenue (there's a bicycle shop on the corner). Walk up Willow around five (long) blocks to #161; we're in apartment #2.
Gingi wrote in to note that the #88 bus (see MBTA schedule info), which goes between Lechmere and Davis, runs down Highland Avenue and passes within two blocks of our house. (There's a convenience store, a florist and a pizza joint at the intersection of Willow and Highland.)
Take the bikeway extension into Davis Square and follow the Davis Square directions above
More info (for folks who know the area):
Willow Avenue is bounded on its north end by Broadway, and on its south end by Elm Street; it crosses Highland Avenue a few blocks north of Elm. It's a half mile from Davis Square and a little further from Porter Square (see T and walking directions above).
From points south (including the Mass Pike):
From points north:
From other points (to be fleshed out further later):
From points northwest of the city, it's probably easiest to take Rt 2 into Alewife, then bear off left onto Rt 16 West, towards Somerville. Take a right at the Foodmaster onto Broadway. You'll drive along Broadway for a little over a mile, passing through Teele Square and navigating through the Powderhouse Square rotary. Willow is the next light after the rotary; take a right and drive up a few blocks to #161 (we're in apartment #2).
